Hey everyone,

I'm new here and I'm looking for some help. I've recently been diagnosed with eczema and I'm looking to learn more about it. Can anyone tell me what the seven different types of eczema are? I would really appreciate any help you can offer.

Subtitle Forum: Types of Eczema

Eczema is a term for several different types of skin inflammation. Atopic dermatitis is the most common of the many types of eczema. Eczema affects people of all ages, but it most often begins in childhood.

The seven main types of eczema include:

Atopic Dermatitis: Atopic dermatitis is the most common type of eczema and usually appears in infancy or early childhood. It is characterized by itching, redness, and dry skin.

Contact Dermatitis: Contact dermatitis is caused by contact with an irritant, such as a cleaning product, a plant, or a chemical. It can cause a rash, blisters, or itching.

Dyshidrotic Eczema: Dyshidrotic eczema is a type of eczema that causes small, itchy blisters on the hands and feet.

Neurodermatitis: Neurodermatitis is a type of eczema that causes itchy, scaly patches on the skin. It is caused by irritation of the nerves and can be triggered by stress.

Seborrheic Dermatitis: Seborrheic dermatitis is a type of eczema that usually appears on the scalp, face, and chest. It is characterized by red, scaly, and itchy skin.

Stasis Dermatitis: Stasis dermatitis is a type of eczema that is caused by poor circulation in the lower legs. It is characterized by swelling, itching, and dark patches on the skin.

Nummular Eczema: Nummular eczema is a type of eczema that causes coin-shaped patches of itchy, scaly skin. The patches may be red or brown and can be quite itchy.

The most common types of eczema are atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, dyshidrotic eczema, nummular eczema, stasis dermatitis, and asteatotic eczema. Atopic dermatitis, also known as 'the itch that rashes', is the most common type of eczema. Contact dermatitis occurs when the skin comes into contact with an irritant or an allergen. Seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin condition, characterized by scaly, red patches on the scalp and other areas of the body. Dyshidrotic eczema is a type of eczema that affects the hands and feet. Nummular eczema is characterized by coin-shaped patches on the skin. Stasis dermatitis is a type of eczema that affects the lower legs. Lastly, asteatotic eczema is a form of eczema that manifests as very dry, scaly skin.

There are seven distinct types of eczema, each with its own unique set of symptoms and causes.

1. Atopic dermatitis: This is the most common form of eczema, and is often seen in children. It causes an itchy, red rash on the skin, usually on the cheeks, arms, and legs. It can be made worse by environmental triggers such as dust mites, pollen, and pet dander.

2. Contact dermatitis: This type of eczema is caused by direct contact with an irritant, such as a soap, detergent, or chemical. It results in an itchy, red rash that can become irritated and painful.

3. Discoid eczema: Also known as nummular eczema, this type of eczema is characterized by coin-shaped patches of itchy, scaly skin. It can be triggered by environmental irritants, such as soaps, detergents, and chemicals.

4. Seborrheic dermatitis: This type of eczema is characterized by a red, itchy rash on the scalp, face, and chest. It is usually caused by a fungus called Malassezia, which is found on the surface of the skin.

5. Varicose eczema: This type of eczema is caused by poor circulation, usually in the legs. It results in a red, itchy rash, and can be made worse by prolonged sitting or standing.

6. Dyshidrotic eczema: This type of eczema is characterized by itchy, fluid-filled blisters on the hands and feet. It is usually caused by stress and can be made worse by exposure to water or sweat.

7. Neurodermatitis: This type of eczema is caused by repeated scratching of the skin, usually due to stress or anxiety. It results in thick, leathery patches of skin and is often very itchy.

Each type of eczema has its own unique set of symptoms and causes, and treatments vary depending on the type. A doctor can help diagnose the type of eczema and recommend the most effective treatment.
