I recently found out I have an autoimmune disease and I'm trying to learn more about it. Has anyone else been through this? How did you know you had an autoimmune disease? What were your symptoms? What treatments did you try? I'm looking for any advice or experiences other people have had with this.

Symptoms

Autoimmune diseases can have a wide variety of symptoms, depending on the type of condition. Common symptoms may include:

Fatigue - feeling tired and weak, even after sleeping for a long time.

Joint pain - pain, redness, swelling, and stiffness in the joints.

Fever - elevated body temperature.

Skin rash - patches of red, raised skin.

Swollen glands - enlarged lymph nodes.

Shortness of breath - feeling out of breath or having trouble breathing.

Diagnosis

If you are showing symptoms of an autoimmune disease, your doctor may order a variety of tests to determine if you have the condition. These tests may include:

Blood tests - to check for antibodies and other signs of inflammation.

Imaging tests - such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs, to look for tissue and organ damage.

Biopsy - to take a tissue sample for further examination.

Genetic tests - to look for genetic markers of an autoimmune disorder.

Once a diagnosis is made, your doctor will discuss treatment options with you. Treatment may include medications, lifestyle changes, and alternative therapies.

Autoimmune diseases can be difficult to diagnose because they are caused by your own immune system attacking your body. Generally, symptoms that indicate an autoimmune disorder include fatigue, joint pain, a rash, fever, muscle aches, swelling, and digestive problems. Your doctor may order blood tests to check your white blood cell count and antibody levels, or imaging scans to look for signs of inflammation or organ damage. With a combination of tests and your medical history, they should be able to determine if you have an autoimmune disorder.

"I was just diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and I'm feeling overwhelmed. Does anyone have any advice?"

First, know that you are not alone. There are many resources available to help you better understand your condition and manage your symptoms, such as support groups, online communities, and healthcare professionals. It's important to stay informed and ask questions to ensure you are taking the best care of yourself. Additionally, it's important to practice self-care and prioritize your physical and mental health. Make sure to get plenty of rest, eat nutritious foods, and get exercise. It's also important to take time for yourself to relax and focus on activities that bring you enjoyment. Lastly, don't forget to reach out for help from family and friends, as well as professional support if needed.

I feel like I have all the symptoms of an autoimmune disease, but my doctor says my tests are normal.

It is possible that your symptoms are not indicative of an autoimmune disease and could be caused by something else. However, if you are still concerned, I would suggest seeking a second opinion from a specialist in the field, or consulting a laboratory for further testing.
