Hi everyone,

I'm interested in learning more about which blood type is considered rare. I understand there are a few different blood types, but am wondering which are the rarest. Does anyone have any knowledge about this topic, or any experience with rare blood types in their own family? Any insight would be much appreciated.

What Is Blood Type?

Blood type is determined by antigens, which are molecules on the surface of red blood cells. The ABO blood group system is the most common classification system used to describe blood type. It has four main categories: A, B, AB, and O.

Which Blood Type Is Rare?

AB negative is the rarest blood type in the world, and it is estimated that only 0.6 percent of the population has it. It is also the only blood type that cannot be replicated by combining other blood types. People with AB negative blood type can only receive blood from other AB negative donors.

Other Rare Blood Types

AB positive is the second rarest blood type, with only 3.4 percent of the population having it. O negative is the universal donor blood type, meaning it can be given to any recipient without the risk of a reaction. However, it is still rare, with only 7 percent of the population having it.
