Hello everyone,

I am new here and I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a question I have. Does anyone know what whooping cough sounds like? I recently heard someone cough and it reminded me of whooping cough, which I thought only happened to children. Is there a specific sound associated with it? Can it be heard from an adult or only from children?

I would really appreciate any help that anyone can offer.

Whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by the bacteria Bordetella pertussis. It is also known as pertussis. It is known for its characteristic “whoop” sound, which is made when a person with whooping cough inhales following a severe coughing fit.

Signs and Symptoms

The symptoms of whooping cough usually begin 7-10 days after exposure to the pertussis bacteria. Early symptoms may include a runny nose, mild fever, and a mild, occasional cough. As the disease progresses, the cough may become more frequent and severe, and the person may have coughing fits that can last for several minutes. During these coughing fits, the person may make the characteristic “whoop” sound as they take a deep breath in. They may also vomit or have difficulty breathing after a coughing fit.

Diagnosis

Whooping cough is usually diagnosed based on the symptoms and a physical exam. A healthcare provider may also order a laboratory test to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment

Treatment for whooping cough usually involves antibiotics to reduce the severity and duration of the illness. It is important to start treatment as soon as possible after symptoms begin in order to reduce the risk of complications. Vaccines are also available to help prevent whooping cough.

Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a highly contagious respiratory infection. It is characterized by a severe, hacking cough followed by a “whooping” sound when the person breathes in. This sound is caused by air rushing into the lungs to make up for the air that was lost during the coughing fit. It can last for several weeks, and the coughing fits can occur more frequently at night. Other symptoms of whooping cough can include a runny nose, fever, and exhaustion.

Q: What does whooping cough sound like?

A: Whooping cough, otherwise known as pertussis, is a highly contagious respiratory illness characterized by a distinctive "whooping" sound while coughing. It is caused by a bacterium called Bordetella pertussis and is characterized by severe coughing fits that can last for several weeks, often followed by a high-pitched “whoop” sound as the person tries to take a breath between coughing fits. The “whooping” sound is caused by air being sucked into the lungs after the forceful coughing fit. Whooping cough can be particularly dangerous for young children and infants, so it is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms.

By listening closely to your child's cough, you may be able to distinguish whooping cough from other types of coughs. Whooping cough is usually a deep, harsh cough that ends with a loud "whoop" sound. The "whoop" is caused by the child's sudden intake of air after a coughing fit. It is also possible to hear a high-pitched "whoop" sound before the coughing fit begins.
