"Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and I'm looking for some help. I have been dealing with allergic rhinitis for a few months now, but I have been trying to ignore it and leaving it untreated. I'm curious to know what will happen if I continue to do this. Does anyone have any experience with this, or can provide me with some insight? Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.

Allergic rhinitis is an inflammation of the nasal passages that occurs when the body’s immune system reacts to allergens. Symptoms of allergic rhinitis can include sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, itchy eyes and nose, and post-nasal drip. Allergic rhinitis can be caused by environmental allergens such as dust, pollen, mold, and pet dander, as well as certain foods.

Risks of Leaving Allergic Rhinitis Untreated

If allergic rhinitis is left untreated, it can lead to a number of complications. These complications include:

• Sinus infections: Allergic rhinitis can lead to inflammation of the sinuses, which can lead to sinus infections. Sinus infections can cause pain and pressure in the face, as well as fever, cough, and congestion.

• Ear infections: Allergic rhinitis can lead to inflammation of the eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear to the throat. This can lead to fluid buildup and ear infections. Ear infections can cause pain, fever, and hearing loss.

• Asthma: Allergic rhinitis can lead to inflammation of the airways, which can lead to asthma. Asthma can cause shortness of breath, chest tightness, wheezing, and coughing.

• Sleep disturbances: Allergic rhinitis can cause difficulty breathing, which can lead to sleep disturbances. Sleep disturbances can cause daytime sleepiness, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

Treating Allergic Rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis can be treated with medications, such as antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal steroids. Allergic rhinitis can also be treated with immunotherapy, which involves exposing the person to small amounts of allergens over time to build up immunity.

In addition to medications and immunotherapy, taking steps to avoid exposure to allergens can also help reduce symptoms of allergic rhinitis. These steps include avoiding triggers, such as dust, pollen, and pet dander, and using air filters and air purifiers to reduce allergens in the home.

Allergic rhinitis can be a difficult condition to manage, but it is important to treat it to prevent complications. If you think you may have allergic rhinitis, talk to your doctor about the best treatment options for you.
