I'm worried about my child's health and I'm not sure what temperature they should go to the hospital. My child's temperature has been higher than normal over the past few days and I'm concerned they may be seriously ill. Does anyone have any advice on what temperature should be a cause for concern and when should I take them to the hospital? Has anyone had a similar experience and can offer advice? I'd really appreciate any help or advice.

Signs of a High Fever in a Child

A fever is usually an indication that the body is fighting off an infection. A fever in a child may occur if they have a virus or bacterial infection. Knowing the signs of a high fever in a child can help parents decide when to seek medical help.

Normal Body Temperature

Normal body temperature for a child is between 36.5 and 37.4 degrees Celsius. If a child's temperature is higher than this, they may have a fever.

High Fever Signs

A high fever in a child can be indicated by a temperature higher than 38 degrees Celsius. In addition to this, a child with a high fever may also experience other symptoms, such as flushed skin, sweating, shivering, headache, stomach ache, and feeling weak and tired.

When to Seek Medical Help

Parents should seek medical help if their child has a fever above 38 degrees Celsius. In addition, if the fever does not improve after 24 hours, or if the child experiences symptoms such as a rash, convulsions, or difficulty breathing, parents should seek medical help immediately.

If a child is exhibiting serious signs of illness such as difficulty breathing, a high fever, persistent vomiting, or severe abdominal pain, it is important to seek medical attention immediately. In these cases, the child should be taken to the nearest hospital or emergency room as soon as possible. It is important to inform the medical staff of any other symptoms the child may be experiencing, such as coughing, difficulty swallowing, rash, or any other concerning signs. The medical team will assess the child and determine the best course of action.

If a child is displaying signs of severe illness, such as dehydration, extreme difficulty breathing, a fever of 102 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, or a rash that covers a large portion of the body, then it's time to go to the hospital. Other signs to look out for include intense abdominal pain, confusion, persistent vomiting, or a noticeable limp. If the child is displaying any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately. It is also important to take into consideration the child's age and medical history when making a decision about seeking medical attention.

"My son is 4 days old and has a temperature of 100.3 Fahrenheit. Should I take him to the hospital or wait and see if it goes away?"

It is always better to be safe than sorry, so if your son's temperature is 100.3 Fahrenheit, I would take him to the hospital as soon as possible. Generally, a baby's temperature should not be over 100.4 Fahrenheit. If it is, it could be a sign of infection and should be checked out. Even if you think it is nothing serious, it is still important to get your son seen by a doctor so that they can rule out any potential problems. If they determine that it is nothing serious, they will advise you on the best course of action.

Question: "My child has a fever of 102. Should I take them to the hospital?"

Answer: If your child is otherwise acting normally and does not have any other symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, then it is likely safe to treat the fever at home with over-the-counter medications. However, if the fever persists or worsens, or your child is exhibiting other concerning symptoms, then it is best to take them to the hospital for further evaluation.
