"Hello everyone,

I'm new to this forum and I'm looking for some help. I'm a Coeliac sufferer and I'm trying to learn more about what I should avoid when it comes to food. I was wondering if anyone could provide me with a list of foods that I should not be eating to stay safe? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Wheat and Gluten

Coeliac sufferers should avoid all wheat and products containing gluten. This includes bread, pasta, couscous, crackers, cake, biscuits, pie crusts, and many breakfast cereals. Gluten can also be found in many processed foods and condiments, such as sauces, gravies, and processed meats.

Barley and Rye

Barley and rye are also off-limits for coeliac sufferers. This means that people should avoid foods such as malt, beer, and some cereals. Barley and rye can also be found in some processed and ready-made foods, so it is important to read labels carefully.

Oats

Oats are usually safe for coeliac sufferers, as they do not contain gluten. However, some oats may be processed in factories that also process wheat, so it is important to check the label to ensure the oats are gluten-free.

Dairy Products

Dairy products such as milk, cheese, butter, and yoghurt are generally safe for people with coeliac disease. However, some processed dairy products may contain gluten, so it is important to read labels carefully.

Other Foods

Other foods that may contain gluten include pre-packed salads, pre-cooked meats, soups, and marinades. It is important to read labels carefully to ensure these products are gluten-free. It is also advisable to avoid eating out in restaurants and cafes, as cross-contamination of food can occur in kitchens.

Coeliac sufferers must avoid eating anything that contains gluten. This includes wheat, rye, barley, and anything made from these grains. This includes bread, pasta, cereals, cakes, and biscuits. Additionally, some processed foods, such as sauces, soups, and some processed meats, may contain gluten. It is important to read food labels carefully to ensure that the food does not contain any gluten. Finally, it is important to avoid cross-contamination with foods that contain gluten, such as using the same utensils or surfaces to prepare both gluten-containing and gluten-free food.

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disorder that affects the digestive system. It is caused by an intolerance to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. As such, it is important for Coeliac sufferers to pay close attention to their diet and avoid foods that contain gluten.

Foods that contain wheat, barley, and rye should be avoided, including breads, pastas, cereals, and baked goods. Additionally, many processed foods contain hidden sources of gluten, such as malt flavoring, modified food starch, and hydrolyzed vegetable protein, so it is important to read the labels of all foods to ensure they are gluten-free.

Coeliac sufferers should also avoid foods that may have been exposed to gluten through cross-contamination. This includes anything that has come into contact with gluten-containing foods, such as utensils that have been used to prepare gluten-containing foods, cutting boards, and toaster ovens.

When eating out, Coeliac sufferers should always inform the restaurant staff of their dietary needs and ask specific questions about the ingredients in the food being ordered.

In general, Coeliac sufferers should avoid all foods that contain wheat, barley, and rye, as well as any processed foods that contain hidden sources of gluten. They should also be aware of cross-contamination and inform restaurant staff of their dietary needs. By following these guidelines, Coeliac sufferers can ensure that they are following a safe and healthy diet.

"I don't understand why I'm not allowed to eat oats. Can someone explain?"

Oats are naturally gluten free, however they are often contaminated with gluten due to the way they are stored, processed and transported. Coeliac sufferers must therefore be vigilant when it comes to oats, and check that they are certified gluten-free, as contamination can occur at any point in the production process. Even trace amounts of gluten can cause a reaction, so it is best to avoid oats unless they have been specifically certified as safe for those with Coeliac disease.
