Hello everyone,

I'm looking for some help understanding the problems that can arise from very low levels of vitamin D. I've heard that it affects our overall health, but I'm not sure what the specific issues are. Does anyone have any insight into this? Is there anything I should be aware of in terms of signs or symptoms? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What is Vitamin D?

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in very few foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement. It is also produced endogenously when ultraviolet rays from sunlight strike the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis. Vitamin D obtained from sun exposure, food, and supplements is biologically inert and must undergo two hydroxylations in the body for activation.

What Problems Can Very Low Vitamin D Cause?

Having very low levels of vitamin D can lead to a number of health problems. Evidence suggests that people with low levels of vitamin D may be at an increased risk of:

Bone problems: Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, which is needed for healthy bones. People with low levels of vitamin D may have weak bones and be at an increased risk of fractures.

Cancer: Low levels of vitamin D may be linked to an increased risk of certain types of cancer, such as colorectal, breast, and prostate cancer.

Heart disease: Low levels of vitamin D may be associated with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

Mental health: Low levels of vitamin D have been linked to an increased risk of depression, cognitive impairment, and dementia.

Autoimmune diseases: Low levels of vitamin D may be associated with an increased risk of autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
