What are Allergies?

Allergies are an overreaction of the body's immune system to certain substances, such as pollen, pet dander, dust, and certain foods. Allergies can cause a range of symptoms, from mild to severe, and can even be life-threatening.

How Common are Allergies?

It is estimated that up to 40 percent of the world's population suffers from some form of allergy. Allergies can affect people of any age, although they are most common in children and young adults. The prevalence of allergies is highest in North America, but allergies are also common in Europe, Asia, and other parts of the world.

What Are the Most Common Allergens?

The most common allergens are pollen, pet dander, dust mites, mold spores, and certain foods, such as peanuts, tree nuts, milk, and eggs. Other allergens can include medications, latex, and insect stings.

What Are the Symptoms of Allergies?

The symptoms of an allergic reaction can vary depending on the type of allergen involved. Common symptoms include sneezing, itching, runny nose, watery eyes, skin rash, hives, and difficulty breathing. In some cases, an allergy can cause a severe reaction known as anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening.

Can Allergies Be Treated?

Allergies can be treated with medications, such as antihistamines and corticosteroids, or with immunotherapy. Immunotherapy involves exposing the patient to gradually increasing doses of the allergen, which can help the body build up tolerance to the allergen and reduce the severity of allergic reactions.
