Hello, everyone! I'm new here and I'm hoping someone can help me out with a problem I'm having. Recently, I started having a really bad toothache and I'm wondering what medicine might be good for relieving the pain. I've tried taking ibuprofen, but it doesn't seem to be helping. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions on what might work better? I'd really appreciate any help that anyone can offer.

Over-the-Counter Pain Medications

Depending on the severity of the toothache, over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), acetaminophen (Tylenol), or aspirin may help to relieve the pain. Be sure to follow the directions on the package for the recommended dose.

Numbing Gels

Numbing gels such as benzocaine (Anbesol, Orajel) can be applied to the affected area to relieve pain. These gels are applied directly to the affected area and can provide temporary relief from the pain.

Salt Water Rinse

Salt water rinses can help to reduce swelling and pain associated with toothache. To make the rinse, mix a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water and swish it around your mouth for about one minute before spitting it out.

Prescription Medications

If over-the-counter medications and home remedies are not providing relief from the pain, a dentist may prescribe a stronger medication such as an antibiotic or a muscle relaxant. These medications should be taken as directed by the dentist or physician.
