I'm looking for some advice on what medicine is best for a cough. I've tried a few remedies I read online, but none of them seem to be helping. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm open to anything from over-the-counter drugs to herbal remedies.

Over-the-Counter Medication

When it comes to treating a cough, there are several over-the-counter (OTC) medications available. Some of the most commonly used OTC medications for a cough include:

Antitussives: Antitussives are medications that help suppress or reduce coughing. Examples include dextromethorphan (Robitussin) and codeine.

Expectorants: Expectorants are medications that help thin and loosen mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough up. Examples include guaifenesin (Mucinex) and terpin hydrate.

Decongestants: Decongestants are medications that help reduce nasal and sinus congestion, making it easier to breathe. Examples include pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) and phenylephrine (Sudafed PE).

Antihistamines: Antihistamines are medications that help reduce allergy symptoms, such as sneezing and a runny nose. Examples include diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and loratadine (Claritin).

Prescription Medication

In some cases, your doctor may prescribe a stronger medication to help treat your cough. Examples of prescription medications that may be used to treat a cough include:

Nasal corticosteroids: Nasal corticosteroids are medications that help reduce inflammation in the airways. Examples include fluticasone (Flonase) and mometasone (Nasonex).

Leukotriene modifiers: Leukotriene modifiers are medications that help reduce inflammation in the airways. Examples include montelukast (Singulair) and zafirlukast (Accolate).

Bronchodilators: Bronchodilators are medications that help open up the airways and make it easier to breathe. Examples include albuterol (Proventil) and ipratropium (Atrovent).

Oral corticosteroids: Oral corticosteroids are medications that help reduce inflammation in the airways. Examples include prednisone and methylprednisolone (Medrol).

There are many over-the-counter medications available to help treat a cough. These include cough suppressants such as dextromethorphan, expectorants such as guaifenesin, and antihistamines such as diphenhydramine. Additionally, an inhaler with a steroid medication, such as budesonide, may be prescribed for more serious cases. If the cough is caused by allergies, an antihistamine can help reduce the inflammation in the throat. For a chesty cough caused by a virus, a decongestant can help to loosen mucus and make it easier to cough up. In all cases, it is important to drink plenty of fluids and get adequate rest, as this will help to speed up the healing process.

Coughs can be caused by a variety of different illnesses, so it's important to first identify the underlying cause. Depending on the type of cough you have, a doctor may prescribe a medication such as an antihistamine or a decongestant. If the cough is caused by an infection, antibiotics may be appropriate. Additionally, over-the-counter medications such as cough suppressants or expectorants may be helpful in relieving symptoms. To determine the best course of treatment, it's important to speak to a doctor.

Q: What medicine is good for a cough?

A: Depending on the type of cough and underlying cause, different medicines may be recommended. Generally speaking, over-the-counter medications such as dextromethorphan, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen can help relieve a dry cough or one caused by a cold. For a wet cough, or one caused by allergies, antihistamines such as diphenhydramine and loratadine can be effective. To help relieve chest congestion, expectorants such as guaifenesin can help. If your cough is due to a bacterial infection, antibiotics may be necessary. It's best to consult your doctor to determine which medicine would be most appropriate and effective for your cough.
