Pneumoconiosis is an occupational lung disease caused by long-term exposure to dust in the workplace. Treatment of pneumoconiosis depends on the type and severity of the condition. In general, medications used to treat pneumoconiosis include bronchodilators, steroids, and mucolytics. Bronchodilators, such as albuterol, help to open the airways and reduce the symptoms of coughing and wheezing. Steroids, such as prednisone, help to reduce inflammation in the lungs. Mucolytics, such as N-acetylcysteine, help to thin and loosen mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough up. In some cases, supplemental oxygen therapy may also be used to improve the oxygen levels in the blood. Finally, antibiotics may be prescribed to treat any secondary infections of the lungs.
