Hi everyone,

I'm looking for help understanding what labs are elevated with autoimmune hepatitis. I'm trying to understand the diagnosis and treatment of autoimmune hepatitis, and I'm not sure what labs I should be testing for. If anyone has experience with this or has any advice, I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks in advance for your help.

Autoimmune Hepatitis Labs

Autoimmune hepatitis is an inflammatory liver disease caused by an immune system that mistakenly attacks the liver. A diagnosis of autoimmune hepatitis is made when laboratory tests and a liver biopsy show evidence of inflammation and the presence of certain antibodies in the blood. The following laboratory tests are commonly used to diagnose autoimmune hepatitis:

Antinuclear Antibodies (ANA): ANA is an antibody that is found in people with autoimmune diseases. People with autoimmune hepatitis usually test positive for ANA.

Anti-Smooth Muscle Antibodies (ASMA): ASMA is another antibody that is found in people with autoimmune diseases. People with autoimmune hepatitis usually test positive for ASMA.

Liver Enzyme Tests: Liver enzyme tests measure the activity of certain enzymes in the blood that are produced by the liver. People with autoimmune hepatitis usually have elevated levels of liver enzymes.

Liver Biopsy: A liver biopsy is a procedure where a small sample of liver tissue is removed and examined under a microscope. A liver biopsy can be used to confirm a diagnosis of autoimmune hepatitis and to evaluate the extent of liver damage.

Autoimmune hepatitis is a chronic condition in which your body’s immune system attacks and damages your liver. Common lab tests that may be elevated to diagnose autoimmune hepatitis include aminotransferase (ALT and AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), and total bilirubin. Your doctor may also order a complete blood count (CBC) to check for anemia. Finally, a hepatitis B and C virus test may be performed to rule out other causes of liver damage.

Autoimmune hepatitis is a chronic liver disease that is caused by the body’s own immune system attacking healthy liver cells. As a result, the liver inflammation can lead to elevated levels of certain liver enzymes including ALT, AST, GGT, and bilirubin. Other tests that may be done to diagnose autoimmune hepatitis include serum immunoglobulins, ANA, and anti-smooth muscle antibodies. Further evaluation may also include a liver biopsy to assess the damage to the liver.

Autoimmune hepatitis is a chronic condition in which the body's immune system attacks the liver. Lab tests are used to diagnose and monitor the progression of the disease. Commonly elevated labs include liver enzymes (AST and ALT), IgG and IgM, and ANA. Bilirubin, albumin, and prothrombin time may also be tested. Blood tests can also be used to detect the presence of autoantibodies that are associated with autoimmune hepatitis, such as anti-smooth muscle antibody and anti-nuclear antibody. Imaging tests, such as ultrasound or a liver biopsy, may also be used to assess the extent of damage to the liver.

Autoimmune hepatitis is a chronic liver disease characterized by elevated laboratory values of ALT, AST, GGT, and IgG. Additionally, a test for autoantibodies such as ANA, SMA, ASMA, and anti-LKM1 may be performed to confirm the diagnosis.
