Chest pain is a common symptom that can be caused by many different medical conditions. It can range from mild to severe and can be caused by a variety of factors. When chest pain is sudden and severe, it can be alarming and should be evaluated by a medical professional as soon as possible.

Types of Alarming Chest Pain

The following types of chest pain are considered alarming and should be evaluated by a medical professional right away:

Angina: Angina is chest pain that occurs when the heart muscle is not getting enough oxygen-rich blood. It is often caused by a narrowing of the arteries that supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart. Angina is usually described as a squeezing, pressure, burning, or tightness in the chest.

Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack): A heart attack is a serious medical emergency caused by a sudden blockage of the artery that supplies oxygen-rich blood to the heart. It can cause severe chest pain that may spread to the neck, jaw, back, or arms. Pressure, squeezing, or a feeling of fullness in the chest are also common symptoms.

Aortic Dissection: Aortic dissection is a medical emergency that occurs when the wall of the main artery in the body (the aorta) tears. Aortic dissection can cause sudden, severe chest pain that may feel like a tearing or ripping sensation. It can also cause pain in the back, abdomen, or neck.

Pulmonary Embolism: A pulmonary embolism is a blockage of an artery in the lungs caused by a blood clot. It can cause sharp, stabbing chest pain that may worsen when taking a deep breath. Other symptoms include shortness of breath, rapid breathing, and coughing.

When to Seek Medical Attention

Any sudden, severe chest pain should be evaluated by a medical professional right away. Other signs and symptoms that may indicate a medical emergency include difficulty breathing, cold sweat, lightheadedness, nausea, or feeling faint.

If you experience chest pain, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible. Prompt medical attention can help diagnose the cause of the chest pain and provide appropriate treatment.

Chest pain can be caused by a variety of conditions, and it can range from mild to severe. If the pain is sudden, sharp, or accompanied by other symptoms such as shortness of breath, dizziness, or sweating, it is important to seek medical attention right away as it may be a sign of a serious medical condition such as a heart attack. If the pain is accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or a feeling of pressure or tightness in the chest, it is also important to seek medical attention. In any case, chest pain should never be ignored and medical attention should be sought if the pain persists or worsens.

Chest pain is always something to take seriously and can be a sign of a serious medical issue. If it is a sharp, stabbing pain that does not go away or gets worse over time, it is especially concerning. You should also take note if it is accompanied by shortness of breath, sweating, or nausea. Seek medical attention immediately if the pain is sudden and severe, or if it is accompanied by any of the above symptoms. It is always better to be safe and to get checked out by a doctor as soon as possible.
