Adenoviruses have been around for centuries and are believed to have originated from animal viruses. They were first identified in the 1950s and since then, adenoviruses have been found to cause a wide range of infections in both humans and animals. The virus can cause illnesses such as respiratory illnesses, conjunctivitis, and gastroenteritis in humans, as well as various infections in animals.
Viral Structure
Adenoviruses are non-enveloped, double-stranded DNA viruses. They have an icosahedral capsid that contains DNA and is surrounded by a layer of proteins. The virus does not have a cell wall, and is therefore not susceptible to antibiotics.
Transmission
Adenoviruses are spread through contact with infected individuals or objects, as well as through airborne particles. The virus can live on surfaces for up to several days and can remain infectious for long periods of time.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Adenoviral infections can be diagnosed through a variety of methods, including PCR testing, culture, and serology. Treatment for adenoviral infections typically involves supportive care and the use of antiviral medications. Vaccines are also available for some serotypes of adenovirus.
