Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum and I'm looking for some help. I'm trying to understand what hemoglobin level requires a transfusion. I know that hemoglobin levels that are too low can be dangerous, but I'm not sure what the exact level is that requires a transfusion. Can anyone help me out? Any information or resources would be greatly appreciated.

What is hemoglobin?

Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. It is made up of four protein molecules called globin and four heme groups. Each heme group contains an atom of iron, which binds to oxygen and gives red blood cells their red color.

What is the normal hemoglobin level?

The normal hemoglobin level for adults is typically between 12.0 and 16.0 grams per deciliter (g/dL) of blood. A low hemoglobin level is typically considered to be anything below 12.0 g/dL.

What hemoglobin level requires a transfusion?

In general, transfusions of red blood cells are recommended for adults with a hemoglobin level of less than 8.0 g/dL. In certain situations, such as anemia due to a chronic disease, transfusions may be recommended at higher hemoglobin levels. Doctors may also recommend transfusions if a person is showing signs and symptoms of anemia, even if their hemoglobin level is still in the normal range.
