What is Albinism?
Albinism is a rare, inherited genetic condition that causes a lack of pigment in the skin, hair, and eyes. People with albinism can have very pale skin, white or pink-tinged hair, and light blue or gray eyes. Albinism affects both sexes equally and occurs in all racial and ethnic groups.
Chances of Having an Albino Baby
When two people with albinism have a baby, there is a 25% chance that the baby will also have albinism. This is because albinism is a recessive genetic condition, which means that both parents must carry the gene for albinism in order for the baby to have it. If both parents are carriers of the gene, they have a 25% chance of having a baby with albinism, a 50% chance of having a baby who is a carrier of the gene, and a 25% chance of having a baby who does not have the gene.
Genetic Testing for Albinism
If parents are concerned that their baby might have albinism, they can get genetic testing done. This testing can detect the gene that causes albinism and determine if the baby is a carrier. Genetic testing is not always necessary, however, as albinism can be diagnosed by a physical examination.
Living with Albinism
The physical characteristics associated with albinism can be managed with medical, educational, and lifestyle interventions. People with albinism may need to take extra precautions when outside in order to protect their skin, eyes, and vision. They may also need to wear protective eyewear when engaging in activities such as sports or swimming. With the right supports in place, people with albinism can lead full and successful lives.
