I have recently been diagnosed with Coeliac Disease and I am having trouble understanding which foods I need to avoid. Can anyone help me out and explain which foods trigger Coeliac Disease? I know I need to avoid gluten but are there any other foods that I should stay away from? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Grains and Starches

Coeliac disease is triggered by the consumption of gluten, which is found in many grains and starches. Wheat, barley, rye and triticale are the most common grains containing gluten. Other grains and starches that contain gluten include spelt, kamut, bulgur, farro, semolina, durum flour, malt, couscous, and rye flour. Oats may also contain trace amounts of gluten, and should be avoided by those with Coeliac disease.

Processed Foods and Beverages

Many processed foods and beverages contain gluten. Foods to avoid include breads, pastas, cereals, crackers, energy bars, and many types of cakes and cookies. Beer, ales, lagers, and malt beverages contain gluten, and should be avoided. Imitation meats, such as imitation crab, may also contain gluten, so it is important to read labels carefully.

Condiments and Sauces

Many condiments and sauces contain gluten, including soy sauce, salad dressings, and gravies. It is important to read labels carefully to ensure that these products do not contain wheat, barley, or rye.

Medications and Supplements

Some medications and supplements may contain gluten. It is important to read labels carefully to ensure that these products do not contain wheat, barley, or rye.

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes the body to react negatively to gluten. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley, and foods that contain these grains are common triggers for those with Coeliac disease.

Common culprits of gluten include bread, pasta, cereal, and pizza, as well as many processed foods such as soups, sauces, and condiments. Other items to watch out for include beer, malt, and some food additives.

It is also important to be mindful of hidden sources of gluten, which can be found in many unexpected places. These include cookies, crackers, cakes, donuts, muffins, and other baked goods. Oats can also contain gluten if they are processed in a facility that also processes wheat, rye, and barley.

Cross-contamination is another issue to consider, as gluten can be transferred from one food item to another if they are prepared in the same kitchen or on the same surfaces. For example, if a cutting board is used to prepare both gluten-containing and gluten-free food items, the gluten can be transferred from one item to the other.

Therefore, it is important for those with Coeliac disease to be aware of the potential triggers for their condition, and to pay close attention to the ingredients and preparation methods for all food items they consume.

The foods that tend to trigger a reaction in those with Coeliac Disease are typically those that contain gluten, such as wheat, barley, rye, triticale, and any foods that contain these grains as ingredients. Additionally, oats can contain gluten if they have been processed in facilities that also process gluten-containing grains, so it is best to opt for gluten-free oats. Other foods to avoid include certain processed meats, sauces, and even some medications that contain gluten as a binder.
