What does it mean when AST is high

I'm new to understanding lab results and I'm hoping to get some help. Recently, I've had some blood work done and my AST (aspartate aminotransferase) level is high. Can anyone explain to me what this means and what I should do about it? Is it something to be concerned about? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

AST stands for aspartate aminotransferase, which is an enzyme that is found in the liver, heart, and other organs. When AST levels are high, it usually indicates some type of liver damage or disease. High AST levels can be caused by viral hepatitis, alcohol abuse, drug overdose, and certain medications. It is important to get an accurate diagnosis from a doctor. Treatment will depend on the underlying cause.
