What Causes Pinworm Infections?
Pinworm infections are caused by ingesting microscopic eggs that are found in contaminated surfaces, such as bedding, clothing, and toys. Pinworm eggs can also be inhaled from the air, or transferred from person to person through close contact.
What Are the Symptoms of Pinworm Infection?
The most common symptom of pinworm infection is itching around the anus or vagina, which is caused by the female pinworm laying eggs in the skin. Other symptoms of pinworm infection include difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite, and abdominal pain.
How Are Pinworm Infections Diagnosed?
A doctor can diagnose a pinworm infection by examining a sample of the patient's stool under a microscope. The doctor may also use a tape test, which involves sticking clear tape to the skin around the anus to collect eggs for examination.
How Are Pinworm Infections Treated?
Pinworm infections can usually be treated with over-the-counter medications. It is important to follow the instructions carefully, as some medications need to be taken multiple times to effectively treat the infection. In some cases, a doctor may prescribe a stronger medication. In addition, it is important to keep the infected area clean and dry, and to wash bedding, clothing, and toys regularly to prevent reinfection.
