Hello everyone,

I hope someone can help me with this question. I'm trying to learn more about autoimmune hemolytic anemia and what disorders can cause it. Does anyone know about any diseases or conditions that can trigger the development of autoimmune hemolytic anemia? I would really appreciate any advice or information anyone can provide.

Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is an autoimmune disorder in which the body produces antibodies that attack and destroy its own red blood cells. AIHA can be caused by several different conditions, including infections, autoimmune diseases, and some medications.

Autoimmune Diseases

Autoimmune diseases occur when the body produces antibodies that attack its own tissues and organs. AIHA can be caused by a variety of autoimmune diseases, including lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and Sjogren's syndrome.

Infections

Infections can also trigger AIHA. Viral infections, such as cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, and hepatitis C, are known to be associated with AIHA. Bacterial infections, such as mycoplasma pneumoniae, are also known to cause AIHA.

Medications

Certain medications, such as quinidine, sulfonamides, and penicillin, can trigger AIHA. In addition, some chemotherapy drugs can cause AIHA.

Other Causes

AIHA can also be caused by blood transfusions, exposure to certain toxins, and in rare cases, cancer. In some cases, the cause of AIHA is unknown.
