Hi everyone,

I'm hoping somebody can help me with some information - I'm looking to understand what can cause high ALT and AST levels. I've seen some of the potential causes online, but I'm hoping to get some insight from people who've experienced this before. I'd really appreciate any advice or stories you might have.

What are ALT and AST?

ALT and AST are enzymes found in the liver. ALT stands for alanine aminotransferase, and AST stands for aspartate aminotransferase. They are released into the bloodstream when the liver is damaged or inflamed.

What Causes High ALT and AST Levels?

High ALT and AST levels can be caused by a variety of conditions, including viral infections, alcohol abuse, and certain medications. It may also be caused by a more serious condition such as liver cirrhosis or hepatitis. In rare cases, high ALT and AST levels can be caused by a genetic disorder.

How Can High ALT and AST Levels Be Treated?

The treatment for high ALT and AST levels depends on the underlying cause. For instance, if the cause is viral hepatitis, then medication may be prescribed to treat the infection. If the cause is alcohol abuse, then the patient may need to abstain from alcohol and receive counseling. In some cases, the ALT and AST levels may return to normal even without treatment.
