Signs and Symptoms of Leukemia

The signs and symptoms of leukemia vary depending on the type of the disease. However, some general warning signs include:

Fatigue: This is one of the most common warning signs of leukemia, and can be caused by anemia, a condition that occurs when the body doesn't produce enough healthy red blood cells.

Fever: A fever is a common symptom of leukemia and can be caused by the body's inability to fight infection due to a weakened immune system.

Frequent infections: Leukemia can weaken the immune system, leading to frequent infections.

Weight loss: Unexplained weight loss is a symptom of leukemia.

Easy bleeding or bruising: Leukemia can cause a decrease in platelets, which can lead to easy bleeding or bruising.

Pain in the bones or joints: Leukemia can cause pain in the bones or joints.

Swollen lymph nodes: Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpit, or groin can be a sign of leukemia.

Enlarged liver or spleen: An enlarged liver or spleen can be a sign of leukemia.

Diagnosis of Leukemia

If a doctor suspects that a patient may have leukemia, they will typically order a blood test to check for the presence of abnormal white blood cells. Other tests may be necessary to confirm a diagnosis, including bone marrow tests, x-rays, and CT scans.
