Atypical pneumonia, also known as walking pneumonia, is a less severe type of pneumonia that is typically caused by bacteria such as Mycoplasma pneumoniae. It is most common in school-aged children and young adults, and is usually spread through close contact with an infected person.

The symptoms of atypical pneumonia typically develop slowly over several days and may include:

• A dry cough
• Sore throat
• Headache
• Body aches
• Fatigue
• Low-grade fever
• Chills
• Loss of appetite
• Shortness of breath
• Chest pain
• Wheezing
• Nasal congestion

In some cases, atypical pneumonia may also cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. It is important to note that the symptoms of atypical pneumonia may be very similar to those of the common cold or flu, so it is important to seek medical attention if symptoms persist or become worse. Diagnosis of atypical pneumonia is typically made based on the patient’s symptoms, medical history, and physical exam. In some cases, further testing such as a chest X-ray or sputum culture may also be required.

Treatment of atypical pneumonia typically involves antibiotics, rest, and plenty of fluids. If left untreated, symptoms can become more severe and may even lead to serious complications such as lung abscesses or inflammation of the heart or brain. Therefore, it is important to seek medical attention if symptoms do not improve within a few days.
