Physical Signs of Death from Strangulation

Strangulation is a form of asphyxiation, or the deprivation of oxygen, which can lead to death if left untreated. Physical signs of death from strangulation can include:

Livor mortis – This is when the body turns a bluish-purple color due to the accumulation of blood in the lower parts of the body, due to gravity. It typically appears within two to six hours after death.

Rigor mortis – This is when the body stiffens due to the lack of energy in the muscles and can occur as quickly as two to four hours after death.

Petechial hemorrhaging – This is when small red or purple spots appear on the skin due to the rupture of small blood vessels. This is commonly seen in strangulation cases and can appear anywhere from six to twelve hours after death.

Foam around the mouth – This is when a frothy foam appears around the mouth and nose due to the buildup of oxygen-depleted saliva and mucus. This can occur within minutes of death.

Tongue swelling – This is when the tongue swells due to the lack of oxygen and can cause it to protrude from the mouth. This can occur within minutes of death.

Eyes bulging – This is when the eyes bulge out of the sockets due to the pressure created by the lack of oxygen and can occur within minutes of death.

Nail bed discoloration – This is when the nail beds turn a blue or purple color due to the lack of oxygen and can occur within minutes of death.

Facial discoloration – This is when the face turns a blue or purple color due to the lack of oxygen and can occur within minutes of death.

The physical signs of death from strangulation depend on the type of strangulation used. Common physical signs of strangulation include facial edema, petechiae, and ligature marks around the neck. Additionally, tongue swelling, laryngeal trauma, and broken hyoid bone may be present. In cases of manual strangulation, finger or handprints may be present on the neck. In cases of ligature strangulation, the ligature marks may be visible on the victim's neck, and the ligature itself may be present at the scene. Finally, the victim's eyes may be red and bloodshot due to a buildup of intracranial pressure.

Strangulation is a form of asphyxiation, and its physical signs of death are diverse and varied. Most commonly, the victim will have petechiae (small red spots) on the face, neck and chest, as well as ligature marks on the neck. Other signs include frothy fluid in the mouth, nose and sometimes eyes, as well as swelling and bruising of the neck muscles. In some cases, the victim may have bruises on their arms and wrists, indicating a struggle. This type of death is not always obvious, so it's important to look for any of these signs.

Strangulation can lead to physical signs of death such as petechiae, contusions, abrasions, and ligature marks around the neck. Additionally, there may be swelling of the tongue and lips, as well as discoloration of the face, and visible fractures in the hyoid bone or larynx. In some cases, the eyes may also bulge and protrude from the sockets.
