Early warning signs of autism can vary from child to child, however, there are some common traits and behaviors that can indicate a child may be on the autism spectrum. These include difficulty with communication, difficulty with social interaction, restricted and repetitive behaviors, and difficulty with sensory processing.
Communication difficulties may include delays in speech and language, difficulty starting or maintaining a conversation, and difficulty understanding nonverbal cues such as facial expressions. Children with autism may also exhibit limited or absent eye contact, an unusually monotone voice, and repetitive use of words or phrases.
Social interaction difficulties may include difficulty making friends, difficulty understanding others’ feelings, and difficulty understanding social cues. Children with autism may also have difficulty with imaginative play, prefer to be alone, and have difficulty initiating or responding to affection.
Restricted and repetitive behaviors are common in children with autism. These behaviors may include repetitive movements such as hand flapping, body rocking, or spinning, insistence on sameness in routine or environment, and unusual attachment to objects.
Finally, difficulty with sensory processing may include hypersensitivity to certain sounds, textures, tastes, smells, and lights. A child may also have difficulty with tolerance of changes in routine or environment, and difficulty with tolerating physical contact.
It is important to keep in mind that these signs and behaviors may not always mean that a child has autism. If you have any concerns, it is important to speak to a doctor or other healthcare professional.
