Hello everyone,
I’m a parent of a child who has been recently diagnosed with Angelman syndrome and I’m looking for more information about the behaviors associated with this disorder. Can anyone provide me with some insight into what I might expect from my child? Are there any particular challenges that I should be prepared for? Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Angelman syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by severe developmental delay, intellectual disability, motor dysfunction, speech impairment, and seizures. People with Angelman syndrome usually have a happy disposition, often smiling and laughing frequently. Although they face numerous challenges due to their physical and cognitive impairments, they can learn new skills and respond positively to their environment.

Behavioral Characteristics

People with Angelman syndrome typically have a cheerful disposition, often laughing and smiling frequently. They are often very social and enjoy interacting with others. They may be easily excitable and have a short attention span. They may also be prone to episodes of laughter or crying for no apparent reason. People with Angelman syndrome may demonstrate repetitive behaviors such as hand-flapping, rocking, or spinning.

Communication Challenges

People with Angelman syndrome usually have severe speech and language impairments. They may not be able to speak or understand spoken language. They may communicate through gestures, facial expressions, and vocalizations.

Cognitive Impairments

People with Angelman syndrome typically have intellectual disabilities and impaired memory. They may have difficulty with abstract concepts and problem-solving. They may also display difficulty with fine motor skills and self-care tasks.

Seizures

Seizures are common in people with Angelman syndrome and can range from mild to severe. Seizures may be triggered by certain stimuli such as lights or sounds.
