Adenoviruses are common viruses that can cause a range of illnesses. In general, most people who are infected with adenovirus experience mild symptoms that resolve on their own without treatment. However, some people may experience more severe symptoms and long-term effects.
Short-Term Effects
Most people with an adenovirus infection experience mild symptoms that resolve without treatment, including:
• Fever
• Sore throat
• Cough
• Runny nose
• Headache
• Muscle aches
• Nausea and/or vomiting
• Abdominal pain
• Diarrhea
• Pink eye (conjunctivitis)
Long-Term Effects
In some cases, adenovirus infections can lead to more serious health issues, including:
• Respiratory illnesses, such as bronchitis, pneumonia, and sinusitis
• Gastrointestinal illnesses, such as gastroenteritis
• Neurological illnesses, such as encephalitis and meningitis
• Eye infections, such as keratoconjunctivitis
Complications
Adenoviruses can lead to more serious complications, particularly in people with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS, organ transplant recipients, and people receiving chemotherapy. Complications can include:
• Heart failure
• Rejection of a transplanted organ
• Encephalopathy
• Hemorrhagic cystitis
Treatment
Most people with adenovirus infections do not require treatment, as the infection usually resolves on its own. However, people who experience more severe symptoms or complications may need to be hospitalized and receive supportive care, such as intravenous fluids, oxygen, and antibiotics. In some cases, antiviral medications may be used to reduce the severity of the infection.
