Symptoms of Liver Disease

The most common symptoms of liver disease are:

Jaundice, a yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes caused by a buildup of bilirubin in the bloodstream.

Abdominal swelling, caused by a buildup of fluid in the abdomen.

Itching, which is usually caused by a buildup of bile salts in the skin.

Dark urine, caused by a buildup of bilirubin in the urine.

Fatigue, caused by a lack of energy due to the liver's inability to process nutrients.

The five most common symptoms of liver disease are jaundice, abdominal pain, weight loss, fatigue, and dark urine. Jaundice is a yellowing of the skin and eyes caused by a build-up of bilirubin in the blood. Abdominal pain can be caused by inflammation and swelling of the liver. Weight loss is often an early symptom of liver disease and can be caused by malnutrition or changes in the way the body metabolizes food. Fatigue can be caused by a lack of energy-producing nutrients or toxin buildup. Dark urine is another common sign of liver disease and is caused by the presence of bilirubin in the urine.

1. Jaundice: Jaundice is a yellowing of the skin and eyes caused by a buildup of bilirubin, a compound produced in the liver and then excreted in bile.

2. Abdominal pain and swelling: Liver disease can cause swelling in the abdomen, known as ascites, as well as general discomfort and pain in the upper right side of the abdomen.

3. Nausea and vomiting: Liver disease can cause nausea and vomiting, as well as a general feeling of discomfort in the stomach.

4. Dark urine: Dark urine can be a symptom of liver disease, as it indicates that the bile is not being processed correctly. It can be accompanied by a feeling of weakness or fatigue.

5. Itchy skin: Itchy skin can be caused by a buildup of bile acids in the blood, which is a symptom of liver disease. It is usually accompanied by dryness and flaking.

Symptoms of liver disease can vary depending on the underlying cause. Generally, however, common symptoms include jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), nausea, fatigue, dark urine, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite. Other common symptoms of liver disease include fever, itchy skin, swollen abdomen, joint pain, and pale stools. In some cases, individuals may experience bloody diarrhea, vomiting, confusion, and difficulty sleeping. If left untreated, liver disease can cause serious complications, such as liver failure, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. It is important to seek medical attention if any of these symptoms are present, as early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve health outcomes.
