Major Psychological Disorders
The 12 major psychological disorders include: Anxiety disorders, Mood disorders, Substance-Related and Addictive disorders, Personality disorders, Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, Neurodevelopmental disorders, Dissociative disorders, Somatic symptom and related disorders, Feeding and eating disorders, Elimination disorders, Sleep-Wake disorders, and Sexual dysfunctions.
Anxiety disorders involve persistent fear and worry that don't go away. They include panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and specific phobias.
Mood disorders are marked by persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness, or irritability. They include major depressive disorder (MDD), persistent depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and seasonal affective disorder.
Substance-related and addictive disorders involve persistent patterns of compulsive drug or alcohol use. They include alcohol use disorder, opioid use disorder, and nicotine use disorder.
Personality disorders involve patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are atypical or maladaptive. They include borderline personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, and paranoid personality disorder.
Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders involve distortions of reality and difficulty functioning in everyday life. They include schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and delusional disorder.
Neurodevelopmental disorders involve problems with learning, thinking, and behavior. They include autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and Tourette syndrome.
Dissociative disorders involve disruptions in memory, identity, or perceptions of the environment. They include dissociative identity disorder, depersonalization-derealization disorder, and dissociative amnesia.
Somatic symptom and related disorders involve physical symptoms that don't have any known medical cause. They include somatic symptom disorder, illness anxiety disorder, conversion disorder, and psychogenic non-epileptic seizures.
Feeding and eating disorders involve disturbances in eating behavior. They include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder.
Elimination disorders involve inappropriate elimination of body waste. They include enuresis (bed-wetting) and encopresis (fecal incontinence).
Sleep-wake disorders involve disturbances in sleep patterns. They include insomnia, hypersomnia, and narcolepsy.
Sexual dysfunctions involve difficulties with sexual desire, arousal, or orgasm. They include female sexual arousal disorder, male erectile disorder, and premature ejaculation.
