Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer, yet it’s still the fourth leading cause of death in women. It’s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of cervical cancer so that if you do experience any, you can visit your doctor for further examination.
The first signs of cervical cancer can be quite subtle and easy to miss. Common early signs of cervical cancer include:
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding: This can include bleeding after intercourse, between menstrual periods, or after menopause.
- Pelvic pain: This pain may be felt in the lower abdomen, pelvis, or lower back.
- Unusual vaginal discharge: This can include a watery, pink or foul-smelling discharge.
- Pain during intercourse: Pain or discomfort during intercourse can be a sign of cervical cancer.
It’s important to note that these symptoms can also be signs of other health conditions and don’t necessarily mean that you have cervical cancer. However, if you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to visit your doctor to get checked out. Your doctor may order a Pap smear to look for abnormal cells on your cervix, which can be an indication of cancer. Depending on the results of the Pap smear, your doctor may order additional tests such as a pelvic exam, a biopsy, or an imaging test to further investigate any possible signs of cervical cancer.
By being aware of the early signs of cervical cancer and getting regular checkups, you can help ensure that any potential signs of cancer are caught early and treated accordingly.
