Benign enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a common condition which affects men as they get older. Men typically start to experience symptoms of BPH after the age of 40, however, it can occur in men as young as their 30s.
The symptoms of BPH typically include frequent urination, difficulty starting or stopping urination, a weak or interrupted urine flow, and a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying. In many cases, BPH does not cause any symptoms, but in some cases, it can lead to more severe issues such as urinary tract infections and bladder or kidney damage.
BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate, which is a gland located below the bladder. The prostate produces some of the fluid that makes up semen, and as men age, the prostate can become enlarged, leading to BPH. Treatment for BPH is usually not necessary since the condition usually does not cause any serious symptoms. However, if the symptoms are bothersome, there are medications and surgeries available to help treat BPH.
