Aplastic Anemia: What is it?
Aplastic anemia is a rare medical condition in which the body is unable to produce enough new blood cells. It affects both adults and children, however, it is more common in adults or those over the age of 40. Aplastic anemia can be caused by a number of factors, including certain infections, toxic substances, chemotherapy, and radiation.
Diagnosis of Aplastic Anemia
Aplastic anemia is typically diagnosed through a combination of physical examination, blood tests, and bone marrow tests. The physical examination will look for signs and symptoms such as pale skin, fatigue, and shortness of breath. Blood tests will measure the levels of red and white blood cells and platelets, as well as looking for any signs of infection. Bone marrow tests can confirm a diagnosis of aplastic anemia by showing a decrease in the production of new blood cells.
What Age is Aplastic Anemia Diagnosed?
Aplastic anemia can be diagnosed at any age, however, it is more commonly diagnosed in adults or those over the age of 40. In some cases, aplastic anemia can be diagnosed in children, however, this is rare. It is important to note that aplastic anemia can be difficult to diagnose in children as the symptoms may be similar to other medical conditions.
