Sore throats can be a real nuisance and can cause a lot of discomfort. It's often caused by an infection, such as a cold or the flu, and can be accompanied by other symptoms such as a runny nose, headache, coughing, and sneezing. A sore throat can range from mild to severe, and it can be very uncomfortable.

Causes of a Sore Throat

A sore throat is most commonly caused by an infection, such as a cold or the flu. Other causes can be allergies, or environmental factors such as cold weather or air pollution. Smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke can also cause a sore throat.

Symptoms of a Sore Throat

The most common symptom of a sore throat is a feeling of pain or discomfort when swallowing. Other symptoms can include a scratchy or lumpy feeling in the throat, a dry or sore throat, swollen glands in the neck, hoarseness, and a loss of voice.

Treatment for a Sore Throat

The best way to treat a sore throat is to rest and drink plenty of fluids. Over-the-counter pain relievers can also help. Gargling with warm salt water can help reduce inflammation, and honey and lemon can help soothe the throat. If your sore throat is caused by an infection, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics.
