Hello,

I'm hoping to get some help from other forum users about Edwards Syndrome. I'm trying to learn more about the condition and I'm not sure if it is inherited from the mother or the father. Does anyone have any experience with this or know more about it? Can you please share any information you have? Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.

Subtitle: Edwards Syndrome Inheritance

Edwards syndrome, also known as Trisomy 18, is a genetic condition caused by an extra chromosome in a baby's cells. It is a serious condition, and babies with Edwards Syndrome usually don't live long or have severe physical and mental disabilities.

When it comes to inheritance, Edwards Syndrome can be inherited from either the mother or the father of a baby. The extra chromosome can originate from either parent, and it is not always inherited from the same parent.

Maternal Inheritance

When Edwards Syndrome is inherited from the mother, it is called Maternal Inheritance. This occurs when the mother has a chromosomal abnormality in her egg, which is then passed on to the baby. This can happen because of a process known as “chromosomal nondisjunction”, which is when a pair of chromosomes fails to separate during the formation of an egg or sperm.

Paternal Inheritance

When Edwards Syndrome is inherited from the father, it is called Paternal Inheritance. This occurs when the father has a chromosomal abnormality in his sperm, which is then passed on to the baby. This can also happen because of a process known as “chromosomal nondisjunction”, which is when a pair of chromosomes fails to separate during the formation of an egg or sperm.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Edwards Syndrome can be inherited from either the mother or the father, and it is not always inherited from the same parent. It is important to understand the causes of Edwards Syndrome and how it is inherited, as this can help with genetic counseling and the decision-making process for couples who may be at risk of having a baby with Edwards Syndrome.

Edwards syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by a trisomy of the 18th chromosome. The syndrome is caused by an extra copy of all or part of chromosome 18, resulting in an abnormality in the genetic code. In most cases, the extra copy of the chromosome is inherited from one of the parents. The parent with an extra copy of chromosome 18 is referred to as a carrier. In some cases, the disorder can be caused by a spontaneous mutation in the egg or sperm cell.

Edwards Syndrome, also known as Trisomy 18, is a genetic disorder caused by a chromosomal abnormality in which an individual is born with three copies of chromosome 18 instead of the normal two copies. It is typically caused by a random error during the formation of reproductive cells, meaning that it is not inherited from either parent.

The risk of having a baby with Edwards Syndrome increases with maternal age, but can occur in any pregnancy regardless of age. It is estimated that around 1 in 5,000 babies are born with Edwards Syndrome.

The symptoms of Edwards Syndrome vary greatly, but can include low birthweight, congenital heart defects, developmental delays, facial abnormalities, clenched hands, poor muscle tone, and breathing difficulties. Life expectancy with Edwards Syndrome is typically short, but can range from a few hours to several years.

Overall, Edwards Syndrome is not inherited from either parent, but rather caused by a random error during the formation of reproductive cells. As such, it can occur in any pregnancy regardless of maternal age. The symptoms of Edwards Syndrome vary greatly, but typically include developmental delays, low birthweight, and facial abnormalities. Life expectancy with Edwards Syndrome is typically short, but can range from a few hours to several years.

Edwards syndrome is a genetic condition caused by a chromosomal abnormality, typically resulting in a third copy of chromosome 18 in every cell of the body. It is usually caused by a chromosomal abnormality that occurs randomly in the egg or sperm cell during the formation of the embryo. In rare cases, it can be inherited from a parent carrying a chromosomal translocation. In such cases, a parent may be a carrier of the condition and may not display any symptoms.
