Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder characterized by an intense fear of leaving one’s home and being in situations that could lead to feeling helpless or embarrassed. It is not a form of schizophrenia, which is a mental disorder characterized by a breakdown in the relation between thought, emotion, and behavior leading to delusions and hallucinations. While both conditions can be disabling, their causes and symptoms are very different. Treatment for agoraphobia typically involves cognitive behavior therapy, while schizophrenia is treated with medication and psychotherapy.
