Treatment Options
The primary step in treating tooth decay is to remove the decay and then fill the affected area. This can be done with a variety of materials, such as amalgam, composite resin, porcelain, or gold. Your dentist will determine the best option for your situation.
Other treatments may include a root canal to remove the decay, or a crown to protect the tooth. In more extreme cases, the tooth may need to be extracted.
Preventative Measures
The best way to avoid tooth decay is to practice good oral hygiene. This includes brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice a day, and using mouthwash regularly. Limiting your sugar intake, avoiding acidic foods, and visiting your dentist regularly for cleanings and checkups can also help prevent decay.
In some cases, your dentist may recommend the use of sealants or fluoride treatments to help protect your teeth.
