Signs and Symptoms
The signs and symptoms of a strong allergy can vary depending on the allergen and its severity. Common signs and symptoms include itchy eyes, a runny nose, sneezing, coughing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing. In more severe cases, a person may experience hives, swelling of the throat and mouth, difficulty swallowing, and anaphylaxis (a life-threatening allergic reaction).
Diagnosis
To diagnose a strong allergy, a doctor will typically ask about the patient’s medical history and perform a physical exam. The doctor may also order tests such as an allergy skin test, a blood test, or a patch test.
Treatment
The most effective way to treat a strong allergy is to avoid the allergen. However, if avoidance isn’t possible, the doctor may prescribe medications such as antihistamines, corticosteroids, or immunotherapy. In severe cases, an epinephrine auto-injector may be prescribed to help treat anaphylaxis.
