Disinfection Protocols
Hand, foot and mouth disease is a contagious viral infection caused by various strains of the Coxsackievirus. It is most commonly seen in children but can also affect adults. To protect other members of your household from getting infected, it is important to follow proper disinfection protocols.
Cleaning
To start, all surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned with soap and water. This includes floors, furniture, toys, and any other items that the infected person may have come into contact with. Pay particular attention to the areas where the person slept or spent a lot of time.
Sanitizing
Once all surfaces have been cleaned, they should be sanitized with an EPA-registered disinfectant. This includes products such as bleach, hydrogen peroxide, and alcohol. Follow the instructions on the label and make sure to leave the solution on the surface for the recommended amount of time before wiping it off.
Laundry
All bedding, towels, and clothing used by the infected person should be washed in hot water and detergent. It is also recommended to wash any stuffed animals or other items that may have been in contact with the infected person.
Disposal
Finally, all items that cannot be disinfected, such as paper products, should be thrown away. This includes items such as tissues, napkins, and diapers.
By following these steps, you can help protect other members of your household from getting infected with hand, foot and mouth disease.
