Signs and Symptoms
The most common signs and symptoms of a gluten sensitivity include digestive issues such as bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Other common symptoms include fatigue, headaches, joint and muscle pain, and skin rash. People may also experience anemia, depression, and tingling in the hands and feet.
Diagnosis and Tests
The only way to definitively diagnose a gluten sensitivity is through a blood test. This test looks for antibodies that indicate a reaction to gluten. If the test is positive, the doctor may also order a biopsy of the small intestine to check for damage to the villi, which are the tiny, finger-like projections in the small intestine that absorb nutrients.
Treatment and Management
The best way to manage a gluten sensitivity is to follow a gluten-free diet. This means avoiding all foods that contain gluten, such as wheat, barley, and rye. People with a gluten sensitivity should also be careful to avoid cross-contamination from foods that may contain trace amounts of gluten.
