Symptoms of Neck Cancer
The signs and symptoms of neck cancer can vary depending on the type of cancer, its stage, and its location. Common symptoms may include:
• A lump or sore that does not heal
• A sore throat that does not go away
• Difficulty swallowing
• A hoarse or raspy voice
• Unexplained weight loss
• Pain in the neck, jaw, or ear
• Swollen lymph nodes
Diagnosis of Neck Cancer
If you have any of the above symptoms, it's important to see your doctor right away. To diagnose neck cancer, your doctor may perform a physical exam, a biopsy, imaging tests, and blood tests.
A biopsy involves removing a sample of tissue from the area of concern and examining it under a microscope. This is the only way to confirm the presence of cancer cells. Imaging tests such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs may also be used to detect the size and location of any tumors. Blood tests may be used to check for markers of cancer in the body.
Treatment of Neck Cancer
Treatment for neck cancer will depend on the type of cancer, its stage, and its location. Common treatments may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy.
Surgery may be used to remove the tumor or to remove lymph nodes in the neck. Radiation therapy uses high-energy beams to shrink or destroy the cancer cells. Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells. Immunotherapy helps the body's immune system fight off cancer cells.
Preventing Neck Cancer
While there is no sure way to prevent neck cancer, there are some steps you can take to reduce your risk. These include avoiding tobacco, limiting your exposure to sunlight and UV radiation, and eating a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables.
