Hello everyone,

I'm new to this forum and I was wondering if anyone could help me out with something. I was recently told by a doctor that I may have Coeliac disease but I'm confused because I was never tested for it before. Is it possible to suddenly develop Coeliac disease or is it something that you're born with? I would really appreciate any advice or information anyone could provide.

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition which causes an adverse reaction to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. Although it is not possible to suddenly develop coeliac disease, it can remain undiagnosed for a long time.

What Causes Coeliac Disease?

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition caused by an intolerance to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks the small intestine, resulting in damage to the digestive system. This damage can cause a range of symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, fatigue and weight loss.

Can You Suddenly Develop Coeliac Disease?

It is not possible to suddenly develop coeliac disease. It is a genetic condition which is thought to be triggered by environmental factors such as a viral infection or a stressful life event. However, it is possible for the condition to remain undiagnosed for a long time, leading to a sudden diagnosis.

Diagnosing Coeliac Disease

If you suspect that you may have coeliac disease, it is important to seek medical advice. The diagnosis of coeliac disease is based on a combination of medical history, a physical examination and various tests. These tests include blood tests which measure levels of certain antibodies, and an endoscopy which involves taking a small sample of the small intestine to look for damage.

Treating Coeliac Disease

The only treatment for coeliac disease is a strict gluten-free diet. This means avoiding all foods which contain wheat, barley and rye, as well as any foods which may have been cross-contaminated with gluten. It is also important to ensure that all dietary supplements, medications and vitamins are gluten-free.

In conclusion, although it is not possible to suddenly develop coeliac disease, it is possible for the condition to remain undiagnosed for a long time. If you suspect that you may have coeliac disease, it is important to seek medical advice and follow a strict gluten-free diet.

Yes, you can suddenly develop Coeliac disease at any age. It is caused by an abnormal immune reaction to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. Symptoms can range from digestive issues such as bloating and diarrhea, to more general symptoms such as fatigue, anemia, and joint pain. If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, a Coeliac disease test may help diagnose the condition. Treatment involves avoiding all foods that contain gluten, and a gluten-free diet is the only way to manage Coeliac disease.

Yes, you can suddenly develop Coeliac disease. It is a condition that can develop at any age, even in adulthood. While the exact cause is not known, it is believed to be triggered by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Symptoms can range from very mild to severe, and can often worsen over time. Common symptoms include abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, and weight loss. It is important to visit a doctor if you experience any of these symptoms, as early diagnosis and treatment is key to managing the condition.

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disorder that affects the digestive system, causing an adverse reaction to gluten, which is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. While it is possible to suddenly develop Coeliac disease, it is more likely that it is triggered by an event or a change in lifestyle, such as pregnancy, stress, or a viral infection.

Coeliac disease is a genetic disorder, and it is possible for a person to suddenly develop it without any prior symptoms. This is due to the fact that the body’s immune system may suddenly start reacting to gluten, even though it had not previously done so. Symptoms of Coeliac disease can include abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, and weight loss. It can also cause nutritional deficiencies, as the body is unable to absorb some nutrients properly.

If you suspect you have developed Coeliac disease, it is important to see a doctor for diagnosis. The doctor may do a blood test or an intestinal biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment for Coeliac disease involves avoiding all foods and drinks that contain gluten, which can be difficult to do if you are not aware of all the ingredients in a product. It is important to seek support from a dietician if you have been diagnosed with Coeliac disease, as they can provide advice and guidance on how to manage the condition.

In summary, it is possible to suddenly develop Coeliac disease without any prior symptoms. The symptoms of Coeliac disease can be managed by avoiding all foods and drinks that contain gluten and seeking support from a dietician. If you suspect you have developed Coeliac disease, it is important to see a doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
