Gerd, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, is a chronic digestive disorder caused by stomach acid flowing back up into the esophagus. Although it cannot be cured, GERD can be managed through changes in diet and lifestyle and, in some cases, medication.
Symptoms of GERD
The most common symptom of GERD is a burning sensation in the chest or throat, often referred to as heartburn. Other symptoms include:
• Regurgitation
• A sour or bitter taste in the mouth
• Difficulty swallowing
• Chest pain
• Dry cough
• Hoarseness
Causes of GERD
GERD is caused by a combination of lifestyle choices and underlying medical conditions. Common causes include:
• Eating large meals
• Eating certain foods, such as spicy, acidic, or fatty foods
• Smoking
• Being overweight or obese
• Eating too quickly
• Stress
• Pregnancy
• Asthma
• Hiatus hernia
Treatment for GERD
The primary goal of treatment for GERD is to reduce symptoms and prevent damage to the esophagus. Treatment may include lifestyle changes, such as avoiding trigger foods, eating smaller meals, and avoiding lying down after eating. Medications, such as proton pump inhibitors, may also be prescribed. In some cases, surgery may be necessary.
