Can diverticular disease be cured?
Overview
Diverticular disease is a condition that affects the large intestine (colon) and is characterized by the formation of small pockets in the walls of the colon called diverticula. Diverticula can cause abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. While there is no cure for diverticular disease, lifestyle changes and medications can help manage symptoms.
What is Diverticular Disease?
Diverticular disease is a condition in which small pockets or sacs form in the walls of the large intestine (colon). The pockets, called diverticula, can become inflamed and cause abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. Diverticulosis, a related condition, occurs when the pockets form but aren’t inflamed.
What Causes Diverticular Disease?
Diverticular disease occurs when the muscles of the colon become weak due to a lack of dietary fiber. When the muscles are weak, the pressure on the walls of the colon increases, causing the pockets to form.
Can Diverticular Disease be Cured?
Unfortunately, there is no cure for diverticular disease. However, lifestyle changes and medications can help to manage symptoms. Eating a high-fiber diet, exercising regularly, and avoiding certain foods can help reduce symptoms. Medications, such as antibiotics, can also help reduce pain and inflammation. Surgery may be necessary in some cases to treat complications of diverticular disease.
