Why is LDH released

I'm trying to understand why LDH is released and was wondering if anyone could provide some insight. I've read that LDH is an enzyme that is released by cells when they are damaged or stressed, but I'm not sure what the full implications of this are.

Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) is released into the bloodstream when cells are damaged or destroyed. LDH is an enzyme that is found in all body tissues and helps the body break down sugar into energy. LDH levels can be used to detect tissue damage, such as in a heart attack or stroke. High levels of LDH may be an indicator of serious conditions such as cancer, liver disease, or anemia. Low levels of LDH may indicate a nutritional deficiency. LDH tests can also be used to measure the success of treatments for these conditions.
