I'm so embarrassed to ask this, but why does it feel so good to scratch hemorrhoids? I've been dealing with them for a while now and sometimes I just can't help but scratch them. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to stop myself from scratching them? Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the rectum and anus. When these veins become inflamed, they can cause itching, burning, and pain. For some people, scratching the area can provide temporary relief from the discomfort.

Understanding Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are caused by increased pressure on the veins in the rectum and anus. This can be due to straining during bowel movements, pregnancy, sitting for long periods of time, or other factors. Hemorrhoids can be internal (inside the rectum) or external (under the skin around the anus).

Why Scratching Feels Good

Scratching the area around a hemorrhoid can provide temporary relief from the itching and burning sensation. This is because scratching stimulates nerve endings in the skin, which can send signals to the brain that reduce the sensation of discomfort.

The Risks of Scratching Hemorrhoids

Scratching can also damage the delicate skin around the hemorrhoid, leading to further irritation and pain. It can also cause the hemorrhoid to become more inflamed and bleed. For this reason, it’s important to avoid scratching and instead use other treatments to manage the symptoms of hemorrhoids.

Treating Hemorrhoids

The best way to treat hemorrhoids is to reduce the pressure on the veins in the rectum and anus. This can be done by:

• Eating a high-fiber diet to prevent constipation

• Drinking plenty of fluids

• Taking over-the-counter medications to reduce swelling and discomfort

• Using topical creams or ointments to reduce itching and burning

• Avoiding straining during bowel movements

• Doing pelvic floor exercises to strengthen the muscles around the rectum

• Taking sitz baths (soaking in a warm bath) to reduce discomfort

In some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the hemorrhoids.

Scratching may provide temporary relief from the discomfort of hemorrhoids, but it can also cause further irritation and damage. For this reason, it’s important to focus on treating the underlying problem and avoiding scratching.

Scratching hemorrhoids can feel good because it temporarily relieves the itching and burning sensation caused by the irritation. The act of scratching also releases endorphins in the brain which can produce a feeling of pleasure. It is important to note, however, that scratching hemorrhoids can further aggravate the area and cause further irritation. To relieve the itching and burning sensation, it is best to use a hydrocortisone cream or a cooling ointment such as aloe vera. Applying a warm compress to the area can also help to reduce the inflammation and provide temporary relief.

Scratching an itchy hemorrhoid can provide temporary relief as scratching can stimulate the nerve endings in the area, triggering the release of endorphins that can provide a sense of relief. However, scratching the area can also cause further irritation and inflammation, so it is important to take care not to scratch too hard or too frequently. Instead, keeping the area clean and dry can help to reduce the itching sensation, while using a topical cream or ointment can soothe and reduce inflammation. It is also important to consult with a doctor if symptoms persist.

Q: What is the best way to get rid of hemorrhoids?

A: The best way to get rid of hemorrhoids is to make lifestyle changes and to use home remedies to reduce symptoms. Eating a high-fiber diet, drinking plenty of fluids, and exercising regularly can help to prevent hemorrhoids. Additionally, over-the-counter creams, ointments, and suppositories can reduce discomfort, itching, and burning. If these treatments do not provide relief, a doctor may recommend more aggressive treatments such as sclerotherapy, rubber band ligation, or surgery.
