Why do people with BPD cheat

I'm struggling to understand why people with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) might be more likely to cheat on their partners. Does anyone have any insight or experience on the subject? I would really appreciate any help or advice that forum users have to offer.

People with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) have difficulty regulating their emotions, which can lead to impulsive or destructive behavior. Cheating is one of the most common behaviors associated with BPD. People with BPD may cheat because they have difficulty managing their emotions, because they are overwhelmed by their emotions, or because they are trying to cope with their feelings of abandonment or rejection.

Impulsive or Destructive Behavior

People with BPD often act impulsively in an attempt to manage their emotions. They may find it difficult to think through their actions, leading to decisions that may be destructive or even criminal. Cheating is one of these impulsive behaviors. People with BPD often find themselves in a cycle of cheating, feeling guilt and shame, and then cheating again in an attempt to assuage the guilt and shame.

Overwhelmed by Emotions

People with BPD are often overwhelmed by their emotions, which can lead to a lack of impulse control and impulsive behavior. When someone with BPD is feeling overwhelmed by their emotions, they may seek out a way to escape, such as cheating. While this may provide a temporary relief, it can also lead to more destructive behaviors and feelings of guilt and shame.

Coping with Rejection or Abandonment

People with BPD often have a hard time dealing with feelings of rejection or abandonment. They may try to cope with these feelings by seeking out relationships or situations that will provide them with a sense of validation and acceptance. Cheating can be a way for someone with BPD to gain a sense of control or validation, which can lead to feelings of satisfaction in the short-term, but can also lead to more destructive behaviors in the long-term.

In conclusion, people with BPD may cheat because they have difficulty managing their emotions, because they are overwhelmed by their emotions, or because they are trying to cope with their feelings of abandonment or rejection. Cheating can provide a temporary sense of relief or validation, but it can also lead to more destructive behaviors and feelings of guilt and shame. It is important for people with BPD to seek out professional help in order to learn better ways to cope with their emotions and manage their behavior.
