AML, or Acute Myeloid Leukemia, is a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow. It is caused by the overproduction of immature white blood cells, called myeloblasts. People with AML often experience bleeding and other symptoms due to the lack of healthy white blood cells which normally help the body fight infection.
Symptoms of AML
The most common symptom of AML is unexplained bleeding, often from the nose, gums, or other mucous membranes. Other symptoms can include:
• Fatigue
• Shortness of breath
• Easy bruising
• Pale skin
• Fever
• Night sweats
• Unexplained weight loss
Causes of Bleeding in AML Patients
The most common cause of bleeding in AML patients is a low platelet count, also known as thrombocytopenia. Platelets are a type of blood cell that helps your body form clots at the site of a wound. When platelet counts are low, it is harder for your body to stop bleeding, so even small cuts and bruises can be difficult to stop.
Other causes of bleeding can include a low white blood cell count, anemia, and increased fragility of the blood vessels due to the cancer itself.
Treatment for Bleeding in AML Patients
Treatment for bleeding in AML patients depends on the cause. If the patient has thrombocytopenia, they may be given platelet transfusions or medications to help boost their platelet count. If the patient is anemic, they may be given iron supplements or blood transfusions to boost their red blood cell count. In some cases, medications may be used to help reduce the risk of bleeding.
In some cases, surgery may be necessary to stop severe bleeding. For example, if a patient has a tumor that is causing bleeding, it might need to be surgically removed.
Preventing Bleeding in AML Patients
There are a few things that can be done to help reduce the risk of bleeding in AML patients. It is important for patients to avoid strenuous activities and contact sports, as well as any activities that increase the risk of injury. In addition, it is important to keep any cuts or scrapes clean and to seek medical attention if they become infected. It is also important to take any medications prescribed by your doctor to help reduce the risk of bleeding.
