Types of Cancer Tests
There are various types of tests used to detect and diagnose cancer. Depending on the type and stage of cancer, a doctor may recommend one or more of the following tests:
Imaging Tests Imaging tests can help doctors get a better look at the inside of the body. These tests can help diagnose and monitor cancer. Imaging tests include X-rays, computed tomography (CT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, positron emission tomography (PET) scans, and ultrasound.
Laboratory Tests Laboratory tests are used to analyze samples of blood, urine, or body tissues. These tests can help diagnose and monitor cancer, as well as measure how well treatments are working. Laboratory tests include complete blood count (CBC) tests, tumor markers, and biopsies.
Endoscopy Endoscopy is a procedure that uses a lighted, flexible tube to look inside the body. It can help diagnose cancer and also take samples of tissue for testing. Examples of endoscopy tests include bronchoscopy, colonoscopy, and sigmoidoscopy.
Biopsy A biopsy is a procedure in which a doctor removes a small sample of tissue from the body for testing. A biopsy is often the only way to definitively diagnose cancer.
