Pneumonia: Types and Severity
Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs which can cause a range of symptoms, from mild to severe. It can be caused by a variety of different organisms, including viruses, bacteria, and fungi. Depending on the type and severity of the infection, the treatment may vary.
Viral Pneumonia
Viral pneumonia is typically less serious than bacterial pneumonia, and often resolves without any medical intervention. Common causes of viral pneumonia include the influenza virus, the respiratory syncytial virus, and the coronavirus. Symptoms of viral pneumonia may include fever, cough, fatigue, chest pain, and difficulty breathing.
Bacterial Pneumonia
Bacterial pneumonia is usually more severe than viral pneumonia and may require medical treatment. Common causes of bacterial pneumonia include Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Staphylococcus aureus. Symptoms of bacterial pneumonia may include fever, chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing up bloody or green mucus, and rapid breathing.
Fungal Pneumonia
Fungal pneumonia is typically the least serious type of pneumonia and is caused by a variety of different fungi, including Aspergillus, Cryptococcus, and Histoplasma. Symptoms of fungal pneumonia may include fever, cough, chest pain, shortness of breath, and fatigue. Treatment of fungal pneumonia may include antifungal medications.
